Photoflex was founded in 1985 by commercial photographers Gene Kester
and Scott Reeves after a metal retaining rod in a commercially available
softbox kept breaking repeatedly on a photo shoot-out session. Their
invention - the fiberglass retaining rods. Scott Reeves' relation
the with ski industry in those days helped. Though the target was
commercial still photographers in the early days, Photoflex today
manufactures some very functional and cost-effective softboxes for
strobes, and continuous tungsten and HMI hot lights that are popular
with photography, television and cine professionals. Another first
for Photoflex is their LiteDisc, a polyurethane double-laminate
reflector/diffuser that not only increases reflective quality, but
is also acts as a two-in-one since each side is made up of different
shade.
Starlite
The
Starlite series is continuous 3200* Kelvin halogen light source
has been designed to make softbox assembly and teardown fast
and easy. The Starlite QL, which is single lamp unit, uses
a removable handle to make softbox positioning quick and easy.
The Starlite 4 Star utilizes four lamps, which can be individually
turned on for better controllability and increased light output.
Both system housings, made of heat resistant heavy duty cast
aluminum, are designed to quickly dissipate heat, thus allowing
tear down within minutes after a shoot - even if the light
has been on for hours. The quartz lamps for Starlite units
are protected with a outer sleeve of shatter-resistant Pyrex®
and are available in 250, 500 and 1000 watts outputs. Starlites
can be used with most Photoflex continuous hot light softboxes
and also offered in complete location and studio kits, with
their own carry case.
Photoflex makes several LiteDisc reflectors
and diffusers in different size for use with still photography,
cine and television production. These circular lightweight
units are made from a double-laminate polyurethane material
stretched over a highly durable plastic frame and can be compacted
to quarter than their original size for storage and transportation.
Each reflector comes with different shade on each side, making
it a two-in-one product. The diameter sizes are 12",
22", 32", 42", 52" and an oval size of
41" x 71". The reflective colours available in a
combination of any two are White, Silver, Gold and Soft Gold.
Black is also available for light absorption and Translucent
for light diffusion. The MultiDisc 5n'1 Kit comes complete
with LiteDisc Holder, LiteStand, and three 42” LiteDisc with
five colour choice along with retractable hardware in one
easy-to-use zippered container.
