Scott Losmandy, owner of Hollywood General Machining, introduced the first Porta-Jib to the professional film and video community in 1989. The original Porta-Jib, modular in design, was a quality product with its ability to accommodate heavy cameras, easy to assemble and dismantle, and very portable. The Vector Balancing System, a clever idea incorporated in their Jibs, made the jib arm almost self-balancing, no matter what the weight of the camera equipment was. Today company still makes the Porta-Jib along with a smaller jib known as the Porta-Jib Traveller™ that came about from the demands video and 16mm market. The Spider Dolly™ and the FlexTrak™ are other well-received professional camera support products, known for their versatility and portability.
Porta-Jib™ & The Traveller™
The Standard Porta-Jib is for camera equipment up to 45 kgs or for those needing more reach. It’s normal configuration provides a 6 foot boom range, and can be made longer with either the 17" or 36" Extension Kit. These extensions can be ideal for the new lightweight remote heads, such as the MC100 by Varizoom. Without the extensions, the standard Jib can be configured with either a 100mm, 150mm or Mitchell front to accommodate all the professional fluid heads on the market. Its base can be either 150mm or Mitchell to interface with the standard heavy-duty tripods on the market. Or it can be equipped with our LWTi interface plate that allows it to drop into Losmandy's Light Weight Tripod.
The Porta-Jib Traveller is ideal for 16mm film or video cameras that do not exceed 18 kgs in combination with a 100mm fluid head. The Traveller's remarkable storage size, 31 inches at 13 kgs, makes it the perfect tool for the cameraman on the move. Amazingly compact and lightweight, yet it unfolds to provide a sweeping 6-foot boom for dramatic camera motion.
Spider Dolly & FlexTraK
The Losmandy Spider Dolly is the most portable professional dolly on the market. Combined with FlexTrak, the simple 3-Leg Spider converts any tripod into an inexpensive, extremely portable, tracking dolly. In its regular 4-Leg configuration the Spider Dolly can carry more accessories like foot platform, seating, adjustable center column and push bar. Packed in three small flight cases it can be checked through as luggage on an airline. Also, the Spider, when combined with floor wheels and the LWT Tripod, creates an easy and safe way to position heavy cameras and jib arms. The Spider Dolly supports 182kg in its 4-Leg set-up.
Losmandy's FlexTrak seamless dolly track, designed to work with the Spider Dolly, and can be laid in straight runs and sudden curves in any radius or direction. Each track comes in 40-foot long runs that can be rolled up like a water hose. A single track can be doubled for a 17 feet pair of double run. Precision in laying the FlexTrak is not critical since the Spider Dolly's double articulating arms and wheels will pull or push them to the required parallels when the dolly is set on the FlexTrak and moved. This compact and portable dolly/track system is ideal for tight places where regular size dollies will not fit or negotiate easily. A complete system can be ordered with flight cases fitted with wheels and pull-handles.
