UltiMate Director's Finder (UDF) |
The UltiMate is a handheld or tripod-mounted director's finder that includes among
several features: interchangeable lens mountings, multiple camera-type/format-types
ground glasses, an optional 1/2" CCD-ready B&W or color video-tap, and an optional
2X anamorphic desqueezer.
Viewing through the actual shooting lens allows the director or DP to see what the
camera will see before film is exposed. Interchangeable ground glasses accommodate
a variety of shooting formats (including Super-35), and camera types. The video-tap
(via 12V DC power, onboard batteries or external source), gives monitoring capability
behind the scenes and an opportunity to change the composition and look of the shot
before the shot gets on to film.
The UltiMate can record specific shots, and then return to the production facility for
playback and analysis. It can save time by helping to set up the next shot while the
current set is being filmed. Immediate video-prints can be produced to study for
comments or changes. In a tight, difficult or complicated set-up (such as table-tops,
crowd scenes, etc.), the UltiMate can be used to simulate shots, practice moves, and
review the results, all well before the actual scene is committed to film.
The UDF is most one of the most widely used Director's Finder in Hollywood, and now
with many leading DOPs in India. Its designer, Mr. Kish Sadhvani has been awarded
with the Technical Achievement Award (Oscar) for the design of the UDF.
